Aqeel Hayat has over 22 years of diverse experience in the financial industry, significant part of which has been in mobile financial services. He has a proven track record to work in very dynamic environments and in diverse roles. He holds an MSc in Mathematics from the Quaid-e-Azam University of Islamabad and an MBA from Lahore University of Management Sciences.

He has worked at prominent organizations that include the State Bank of Pakistan, Askari Bank Limited, China Mobile Pakistan (ZONG), Inov8 Private Limited, and Systems Limited. This diversity of experience is a much-needed asset to work at the cross-section of banking and information technology to cope with the challenge of digital transformation. For example, it is to his credit that Askari Bank was the first commercial bank to enter the branchless banking in collaboration with a telco and Zong became the most notable player in the distribution of disaster relief and G2P (government to person) payments. In both instances, his teams played the key roles.

He has set for himself the goal of financial inclusion of the bottom of pyramid by harnessing the use of information technology, especially mobile telephony.

Currently, he is working as a consultant with the International Finance Corporation for the adoption of external value chain finance in the sugar and dairy industry. He is also working with My Oral Village, a Canadian not-for-profit organization, to include the less profitable oral (illiterate and innumerate) segment of the market in the formal financial system of Pakistan. This is based upon assistive technology of smart-phone and oral information management.
